When Something made him Sorrowful

أَللَّهُمَّ يَا كَافِيَ الْفَرْدِ الضَعِيْفِ، وَوَاقِيَ الامْرِ الْمَخُوْفِ،

al-laahum-ma yaa kaafeeal-far-diz''-z''ae'ef wa waaqeeal-am-ril-makhoof

1.O God, O Sufficer of the isolated and weak and Protector against terrifying affairs!

أَفْرَدَتْنِي الْخَـطَايَا; فَـلاَ صَاحِبَ مَعِي،

af-radat-neel-khat'aayaa falaa s'aah'iba mae'e

2.Offenses have isolated me, so there is none to be my companion.

وَضَعُفْتُ عَنْ غَضَبِكَ; فَلاَ مُؤَيِّدَ لِي،

wa z''au'f-tu a'n ghaz''abika falaa moo-ay-yida lee

3.I am too weak for Your wrath and there is none to strengthen me.

وَأَشْرَفْتُ عَلَى خَوْفِ لِقَائِكَ; فَلاَ مُسَكِّنَ لِرَوْعَتِي،

wa ash-raf-tu a'laa khaw-fi liqaaa-ika falaa musak-kina liraw-a'tee

4.I have approached the terror of meeting You and there is none to still my fear.

وَمَنْ يُؤْمِنُنِي مِنْكَ وَأَنْتَ أَخَفْتَنِي؟

wa may-yoo-minunee minka wa anta akhaf-tanee?

5.Who can make me secure from You when You hast filled me with terror?

وَمَن يساعِدُنِي وَأَنْتَ أَفْرَدْتَنِي؟

wamay-yusaai'dunee wa anta af-rat-tanee?

6.Who can come to my aid when You hast isolated me?

وَمَنْ يُقَوِّيْنِي وَأَنْتَ أَضْعَفْتَنِي؟

wamay-yuqaw-weenee wa anta az''-a'f-tanee?

7.Who can strengthen me when You hast weakened me?

لاَ يُجيرُ يا إلهي إلاّ رَبٌّ عَلَى مَرْبُوب،

laa yujeeru yaaa ilaaheee il-laa rab-bun a'laa mar-boob

8.None can grant sanctuary to a vassal, my God, but a lord,

وَلاَ يُؤْمِنُ إلاّ غالِبٌ عَلَى مَغْلُوب،

wa laa yoo-minu il-laa ghaalibun a'laa magh-loob

9.none can give security to one dominated but a dominator,

وَلاَ يُعِينُ إِلاّ طالِبٌ عَلَى مَطْلُوب،

wa laa yue'enu il-laa t'aalibun a'laa mat'-loob

10.none can aid him from whom demands are made but a demander.

وَبِيَـدِكَ يَـاَ إلهِي جَمِيعُ ذلِكَ السَّبَبِ، وَإلَيْكَ الْمَفَرُّ وَالْمَهْربُ.

wa beeadika yaaa ilaahee jameeu' d'alikas-sabab wa ilay-kal-mafar-ru wal-mah-rab

11.In Your hand, my God, is the thread of all that, in You the place of escape and flight,

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

fas'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

12.so bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَأَجِرْ هَرَبِي وَأَنْجِحْ مَطْلَبِي.

wa ajir harabee wa anjih' mat'-labee

13.give sanctuary to me in my flight, and grant my request!

أللَّهُمَّ إنَّكَ إنْ صَرَفْتَ عَنِّي وَجْهَكَ الْكَرِيْمَ،

al-laahum-ma in-naka in s'araf-ta a'n-nee waj-hakal-kareem

14.O God, if You shouldst turn Your generous face away from me,

أَوْ مَنَعْتَنِي فَضْلَكَ الْجَسِيمَ،

aw manaa'-tanee faz''-lakal-jaseem

15.withhold from me Your immense bounty,

أَوْ حَظَرْتَ عَلَيَّ رِزْقَكَ أَوْ قَطَعْتَ عَنِّي سَبَبَـكَ

aw h'az'ar-ta a'lay-ya riz-qak aw qat'aa'-ta a'n-nee sababak

16.forbid me Your provision, or cut off from me Your thread,

لَمْ أَجِدِ السَّبِيـلَ إلَى شَيْء مِنْ أَمَلِي غَيْرَكَ،

lam ajidis-sabeela ilaa shay-im-min amalee ghay-rak

17.I will find no way to anything of my hope other than You

وَلَمْ أَقْدِرْ عَلَى مَا عِنْدَكَ بِمَعُونَةِ سِوَاكَ; فَإنِّي عَبْدُكَ،

wa lam aq-dir a'laa maa i'ndaka bimau'wnati siwaak fa in-nee a'b-duka

18.nor be given power over what is with You through another's aid, for I am Your servant

وَفِي قَبْضَتِكَ نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، لاَ أَمْرَ لِي مَعَ أَمْرِكَ،

wa fee qab-z''atik naas'eeatee beeadik laaa am-ra lee maa' am-rik

19.and in Your grasp; my forelock is in Your hand. I have no command along with Your command.

مَاض فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ،

maaz''in fee-ya h'uk-muk a'd-lun fee-ya qaz''aaaw-uk

20.'Accomplished is Your judgement of me, just Your decree for me!'

وَلاَ قُوَّةَ لِي عَلَى الْخُـرُوجِ مِنْ سُلْطَانِـكَ،

wa laa qoo-wata lee a'laal-khurooji min sul-t'aanik

21.I have not the strength to emerge from Your authority

وَلاَ أَسْتَطِيـعُ مُجَاوَزَةَ قُدْرَتِكَ،

wa laaa as-tat'eeu' mujaawazata qud-ratik

22.nor am I able to step outside Your power.

وَلاَ أَسْتَـمِيلُ هَوَاكَ، وَلاَ أبْلُغُ رِضَاكَ،

wa laaa as-tameelu hawaak wa laaa ab-lughu riz''aak

23.I cannot win Your inclination, arrive at Your good pleasure,

وَلاَ أَنَالُ مَا عِنْدَكَ إلاَّ بِطَاعَتِكَ وَبِفَضْل رَحْمَتِكَ.

wa laaa anaalu maa i'ndaka il-laa bit'aaa'tika wabifaz''-li rah'-matik

24.or attain what is with You except through obeying You and through the bounty of Your mercy.

إلهِي أَصْبَحْتُ وَأَمْسَيْتُ عَبْداً دَاخِراً لَكَ،

ilaaheee as'-bah'-tu wa am-say-tu a'b-dana daakhiral-lak

25.O God, I rise in the morning and enter into evening as Your lowly slave.

لا أَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِي نَفْعاً وَلاَ ضَرّاً إلاَّ بِكَ

laaa am-liku linaf-see naf-a'w-wa laa z''ar-ran il-laa bik

26.I own no profit and loss for myself except through You.

أَشْهَدُ بِذَلِكَ عَلَى نَفْسِي وَأَعْتَـرِفُ بِضَعْفِ قُـوَّتِي وَقِلَّةِ حِيْلَتِي

ash-hadu bid'alika a'laa naf-see wa aa'-tarifu biz''aa'-fi qoo-watee wa qil-lati h'eelatee

27.I witness to that over myself and I confess to the frailty of my strength and the paucity of my stratagems.

فَأَنْجزْ لِي مَا وَعَدْتَنِي، وَتَمِّمْ لِي مَا آتَيْتَنِي;

fa anjiz lee maa waa't-tanee wa tam-mim lee maaa aaatay-tanee

28.So accomplish what You hast promised me and complete for me what You hast given me,

فَإنِّي عَبْـدُكَ الْمِسْكِينُ الْمُسْتكِينُ الضَّعِيفُ

al-mis-keenul-mus-takeen az''-z''ae'efuz''

29.for I am Your slave, miserable, abased, frail,

الضَّـرِيـرُ الذَّلِيلُ الْحَقِيرُ الْمَهِينُ الْفَقِيرُ الْخَائِفُ الْمُسْتَجِيرُ.

ad'-d'aleelul-h'aqeer, al-maheenul-faqeer al-khaaa-iful-mus-tajeer

30.distressed, vile, despised, poor, fearful, and seeking sanctuary!

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

31.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household

وَلاَ تَجْعَلْنِي نَاسِيَاً لِذِكْرِكَ فِيمَا أَوْلَيْتَنِي،

wa laa taj-a'l-nee naaseeal-lid'ik-rika feemaaa aw-lay-tanee

32.and let me not forget to remember You in what You hast done for me,

وَلاَ غافِلاً لإحْسَانِكَ فِيمَا أَبْلَيْتَنِي،

wa laa ghaafilal-liih'-saanika feemaaa ab-lay-tanee

33.be heedless of Your beneficence in Your trying me,

وَلا آيسَاً مِنْ إجَابَتِكَ لِي وَإنْ أَبْطَأتَ عَنِّي

wa laaa aaayisam-min ijaabatika lee wa in ab-t'aat a'n-nee fee

34.or despair of Your response to me, though it keep me waiting,

فِي سَرَّاءَ كُنْتُ أَوْ ضَرَّاءَ، أَوْ شِدَّة أَوْ رَخَاء،

sar-raaa-a kuntu aw z''ar-raaa wa shid-datin aw rakhaaa-

35.whether I be in prosperity or adversity, hardship or ease,

أَوْ عَافِيَة أَوْ بَلاء، أَوْ بُؤْس أَوْ نَعْمَاءَ،

aw a'afeeatin aw balaaa- aw boo-sin aw naa'-maaa-

36.well-being or affliction, misery or comfort,

أَوْ جِدَة أَوْ لأوَاءَ، أَوْ فَقْر أَوْ غِنىً.

aw jidatin aw laa-waaa-a aw faq-rin aw ghinana

37.wealth or distress, poverty or riches!

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

38.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَاجْعَلْ ثَنائِي عَلَيْكَ وَمَدْحِي إيَّاكَ

waj-a'l thanaaa-ee a'lay-ka wa mad-h'eee ee-yaaka

39.make me laud You, extol You,

وَحَمْدِي لَكَ فِي كُلِّ حَالاَتِي

wa h'am-dee laka fee kul-li h'aalaatee h'at-taa

40.and praise You in all my states

حَتَّى لاَ أَفْرَحَ بِمَا آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الدُّنْيَا،

laaa af-rah'a bimaaa aaatay-tanee minad-dunyaa

41.so that I rejoice not over what You givest me of this world

وَلاَ أَحْـزَنَ عَلَى مَا مَنَعْتَنِي فِيهَا،

wa laaa ah'-zana a'laa maa manaa'-tanee feehaa

42.nor sorrow over that of it which You withholdest from me!

وَأَشْعِرْ قَلْبِي تَقْوَاكَ،

wa ash-i'r qal-bee taq-waak

43.Impart reverential fear of You to my heart,

وَاسْتَعْمِلْ بَدَنِي فِيْمَا تَقْبَلُهُ مِنِّي،

was-taa'-mil badanee feemaa taq-baluhoo min-nee

44.employ my body in that which You acceptest from me,

وَاشْغَلْ بِطَاعَتِكَ نَفْسِي عَنْ كُلِّ مَايَرِدُ عَلَىَّ

wa ash-ghal bit'aaa'tika naf-see a'n kul-li maa yaridu a'lay-ya

45.and divert my soul through obedience to You from all that enters upon me,

حَتَّى لاَ اُحِبَّ شَيْئَاً مِنْ سُخْطِكَ،

h'at-taa laaa uh'ib-ba shay-am-min sukh-t'ik

46.so that I love nothing that displeases You

وَلا أَسْخَطَ شَيْئـاً مِنْ رِضَـاكَ.

wa laaa ss-khat'a shay-am-mir-riz''aak

47.and become displeased at nothing that pleases You!

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

48.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَفَرِّغْ قَلْبِي لِمَحَبَّتِكَ ، وَاشْغَلْهُ بِذِكْرِكَ،

wa far-righ qal-bee limah'ab-batik wash-ghal-hoo bid'ik-rik

49.empty my heart for Your love, occupy it with remembering You,

وَانْعَشْهُ بِخَوْفِكَ ، وَبِالْوَجَلِ مِنْكَ،

wan-a'sh-hoo bikhaw-fika wa bil-wajali mink

50.animate it with fear of You and quaking before You,

وَقَوِّهِ بِالرَّغْبَةِ إلَيْكَ، وَأَمِلْهُ إلَى طَاعَتِكَ،

wa qaw-wihee bir-ragh-bati ilay-k wa amil-hooo ilaa t'aaa'tik

51.strengthen it with beseeching You, incline it to Your obedience,

وَأَجْرِ بِهِ فِي أَحَبِّ السُّبُلِ إلَيْكَ،

waj-ri bihee feee ah'ab-bis-subuli ilay-k

52.set it running in the path most beloved to You,

وَذَلِّلْهُ بِالرَّغْبَةِ فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ أَيَّامَ حَيَاتِي كُلِّهَا،

wa d'al-lil-hoo bir-ragh-bati feemaa i'ndaka ay-yaama h'ayaatee kul-lihaa

53.and subdue it through desire for what is with You all the days of my life!

وَاجْعَلْ تَقْوَاكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا زَادِي،

waj-a'l- taq-waaka minad-dunyaa zaadee

54.Let my provision in this world be reverential fear of You (ref. 2:197),

وَإلَى رَحْمَتِكَ رِحْلَتِي، وَفِي مَرْضَاتِكَ مَدْخَلِي.

wa ilaa rah'-matika rih'-latee wa fee mar-z''aatika mad-khalee

55.my journey be toward Your mercy, and my entrance be into Your good pleasure!

وَاجْعَلْ فِي جَنَّتِكَ مَثْوَايَ،

waj-a'l fee jan-natika math-waay

56.Appoint for me a lodging in Your Garden,

وَهَبْ لِي قُوَّةً أَحْتَمِلُ بِهَا جَمِيعَ مَرْضَاتِكَ،

wa hab lee qoo-watan ah'-tamilu bihaa jameea' mar-z''aatik

57.give me strength to bear everything that pleases You,

وَاجْعَلْ فِرَارِي إلَيْكَ، وَرَغْبَتِي فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ،

waj-a'l firaareee ilay-ka wa ragh-batee feemaa i'ndak

58.make me flee to You and desire what is with You,

وَأَلْبِسْ قَلْبِي الْوَحْشَةَ مِنْ شِرارِ خَلْقِكَ.

wa al-bis qal-beel-wah'-shata min shiraari khal-qik

59.clothe my heart in estrangement from the evil among Your creatures,

وَهَبْ لِي الأُنْسَ بِكَ وَبِأَوْلِيَـآئِكَ وَأَهْلِ طَاعَتِكَ،

wa hab leeal-unsa bika wa biw-leeaaa-ika wa ah-li t'aaa'tik

60.and give me intimacy with You, Your friends, and those who obey You!

وَلاَ تَجْعَلْ لِـفَاجِـر وَلا كَافِر عَلَيَّ مِنَّةً،

wa laa taj-a'l-lifaajiriw-wa laa kaafirin a'lay-ya min-nataw

61.Assign to no wicked person or unbeliever a kindness toward me

وَلاَ لَـهُ عِنْدِي يَداً، وَلا بِي إلَيْهِمْ حَاجَةً،

wa laa lahoo i'ndee yadaw-wa laa beee ilay-him h'aajah

62.or a hand that obliges me, nor to me a need for one of them!

بَل اجْعَـلْ سُكُـونَ قَلْبِي وَاُنْسَ نَفْسِي

bali aj-a'l sukoona qal-bee wa unsa naf-see

63.Rather make the stillness of my heart, the comfort of my soul,

وَاسْتِغْنَـائِي وَكِفَايَتِي بِكَ وَبِخِيَـارِ خَلْقِكَ.

was-tigh-naaa-ee wa kifaayatee bika wa bikheeaari khal-qik

64.my independence and my sufficiency lie in You and the best of Your creatures!

أللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّد وَآلِهِ،

al-laahum-ma s'al-li a'laa muh'am-madiw-wa aaalih

65.O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,

وَاجْعَلْنِي لَهُمْ قَـرِيناً، وَاجْعَلْنِي لَهُمْ نَصِيْراً،

waj-a'l-nee lahum qareenaa waj-a'l-nee lahum nas'eeraa

66.make me their comrade, make me their helper,

وَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ بِشَوْق إلَيْكَ، وَبِالْعَمَلِ لَكَ بِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَى

wam-nun a'lay-ya bishaw-qin ilay-ka wa bil-a'mali laka bimaa tuh'ib-bu watar-z''aa

67.and oblige me with yearning for You and doing for You what You lovest and approvest!

إنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ،

in-naka a'laa kul-li shay-in qadeer

68."Thou art powerful over everything" (3:26)

وَذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ .

wa d'alika a'lay-ka yaseer

69.and that is easy for You.
